S(lave) M(aking) Entertainment...Yes? No?

The words that are automatically linked with the SM ent - JYJ lawsuit: slave contracts.

I am not going to touch on the profits and earnings portions, or even the length of the contract. What I am going to touch on is the point of "fair and right treatment" which JaeChunSu have quoted as part of the reason of wanting out.

For this post, I am not going to do a "to speak for HoMin, to speak for JaeChunSu, to speak for SM" style. I will just write freely.

Just how packed are the boys' schedule?
Honestly, I do not know because I am not their manager. But, I remember watching them appear on a few Japanese programs in their History in Japan (can't remember which was it, 1,2,3 or 4, most probably was not 1), and they were wearing the same clothes. That means it was on the same day. I think it was Jaejoong's birthday, because he treated them to a meal in a Japanese restaurant. You may say, ah, those are not really long programs, not like they attended 10 programs, one after another with each lasting 1-2 hrs. But hey, do you really know how much time is needed to shoot for a 10 minutes program? I don't know, but definitely not 10 minutes. Plus, the programs are all at different venues. Travel-prep-shoot-look good-smile (you can't look tired or sad in programs)-be charming, witty & funny. Rush & repeat for who knows how many times. And if they are promoting songs, they would be singing and dancing to the same song over and over again for who knows how many times. Though I admit, that is part of their job, they are humans too, not machines.

Do they have vacation?
I don't know. I read somewhere, and I couldn't find it now, that their yearly vacation is really pathetic. In a certain year, it was only 1 day. The longest was never more than 1 week or 10 days in a year. Now, I don't know how true this is. But looking at it. These boys' schedules are jam packed. And they have to study, they are Koreans who could speak Japanese remember? They don't need a translator when they go on shows or do interviews. They have to have hot bodies, so they need to work out. Their dances are all very difficult, imagine they amount of practice needed? Talent is one thing, hard work complements it. Voice training that is.

They work like slaves every single day?
No. I really don't think so. Some fans have claim that these boys only get 3-4 hrs of sleep a day or was it 2-3 hrs. I somehow do not think it is everyday, maybe it is true when they are in the middle of album promotion, concerts or activities, but not every single day in a year. Why? Because, the boys themselves have mentioned that they go for drinks, I think it was Jaejoong & Yoochun. If you don't even have enough time to sleep, do you go for drinks? Will your manager let you out of the house? Don't think so. Also, they mentioned before while on a show, how they got freaked out by a fan who appeared outside their apartment. I can't remember what the fan did, but the boys clearly said that they were watching a movie together. In a separate shows, they have also mentioned, they got interested in an online game together, and would gather at the living room, with their laptops and play games together. Not to forget, these boys also read a lot of manga and watch animes. Although, yea, it was partly to learn Japanese. But if they really do not have even enough time to rest (on a daily basis), I doubt their manager would let them learn Japanese through manga and anime. It would be a proper tutored style of learning. So overall, I don't think they had to survive on a 2-3 hrs or 3-4 hrs sleep everyday. The rest of us, who are not idols, who lead normal lives, would have had our fair share of over-worked stories. I once worked a full day (from 8-ish am to 6-ish pm), went back home to "rest" (as if I could sleep, and don't forget, time was spent commuting to and from workplace), got back to work at 10pm and worked all the way to 2pm the next day. My brain was practically dead. Well, I was not promoting album or having concerts ^.^, I had an important project at work T_T

Were they abused?
Hmm, this one is really fuzzy. Because I really don't know. There are rumors that manager does hit them and were careful about not hitting their face, so that it won't be noticed. For a moment, it seemed really absurd that in this modern days, this type of physical abuse can exist. Sounds very unbelievable. Even more impossible to imagine it happening to these glamorous DBSK boys who have so many fans supporting them. Let's just say, there are 10 people in the company that hits them. But they have at least 800 000 Cassiopeia members supporting them. So that is 80 000 Cassie to 1 SM ent member. If each Cassie gives them a punch, they will be dead or at least lying in ICU for weeks. So yea, it seems impossible. But...just because it seems impossible, does not mean it won't happen. Think of it this way, parents usually try to teach children by talking to them nicely. If it does not work, talking turns to lecturing, then it turns to yelling and soon the caning/ hitting with a ruler/ slapping comes. If parents can do that to their own offspring, what makes you think the company can't do that to these boys and other idols?
So that is the physical abuse part. How about mental abuse?
I came across a clip in YouTube, where the boys were in China (was it Beijing), and they were yelled at. For not doing something, not touching the sponsor's tag or mic or whatever. And that yelling was caught on video. I have no idea what sort of words the yelling contains. But the boys look visibly shaken. Mental abuse can be as lethal as physical abuse. Everyone have their threshold. Life is hard enough as it is, and yes, I believe idols and celebrities have hard times too. Because they are humans too.

Were their creativity restricted?
In short, Yes & No.
No, because they have released self composed songs before. But I think this may been agreed by SM ent to appease the boys.
Yes, because I believe, in order to maintain general appeal, SM ent will want to ensure their music stays main stream. And this objective will take top priority over any other creative attempts by the members. Any musicians worthy of their 2 cents would be irked by this. Because, they will not able to grow musically if they kept getting blocked. Especially if they have proven their worth as composers and lyricist. And at this point, I have to make a note that, the ones who displayed more composing talent here is Yoochun and Jaejoong. So, to say that they felt really suppressed in SM ent, would make perfect sense. Again, remember, these blog contains my opinions, not the law ^.^
I remember watching DBSK House Tour in AADBSK2, and Jaejoong was showing his Bisco in Couple piece on the keyboard. But, was that ever release? However, to be fair, there is always 2 sides of the coin. It could be SM ent didn't like it because they felt it would not appeal to all, would not sell. But it could also be because Jaejoong couldn't complete it. Or, he completed the score, but not the lyrics. I don't know. Only Jaejoong and SM ent knows.

This post will be updated. I don't think I have typed out everything I have in my mind. But I really need to stop and pack, as I will be going away for 2 days.
Meanwhile, I have looked at my stats and realized that yes, there are people visiting this blog. Though I am not sure if they came and read, or just came and left, that would be really sad T_T
If you came, and you read, I would appreciate if you have any comments. Or if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see me write. But please keep the request to a non bashing topic ^.^

*So I am back, to add some more things here.

Were they made to do things which they feel were not right?
I am going to have to thread really carefully here and some people may get offended by what I write. So again, I reiterate, I am writing down my opinions, I am not saying they are facts, and if you choose to read what I write, I offer you the complete freedom to agree or disagree
.
Have anyone heard of young female celebrities, or young-female-celebrities-wanna-be sleeping around with people of influence in order to get a break in the entertainment circle. These type of speculations/ rumors have been going around probably since they day entertainment became a business. These young females could be aspiring singers, actress, models or etc. The people who gets to bed them? Could just be a composer, lyricist, entertainment company board of directors, director or even someone rich enough to invest in them. As absurd as it may sound, I won't put down my money and say this type of "transactions" never happened and can't be true. Extremist who thinks only black & white can exist in this world will always say, "show me the evidence". Well, do you really think there would be evidences for things like this? You mean you honestly think, there will be a contract inked, with something along the lines off "I, xxx, hereby offer my nubile young body in exchange for yyy to invest in cutting out an album for me", and then have it validated by a lawyer in a reputable law firm? Come on, we know that is impossible.

In case you are wondering if I lost my orientation after being away for a day or two, I assure you, my dear blog, my dear diary, I have not. What I wrote above, is leading on to what I am going to write about DBSK.

I am not a fan who have been following them since their debut days. But since I discovered them this year, I have also been looking back at their pass music videos, shows and performances, here's what I can say:
2004-2005
Sorry I didn't do much research, but I think they made it pretty big back home in S. Korea. Their image in general, is more of a cute image. Its like a somewhat asexual image. Of course, they are boys and their fans are 99% females, but its just not the sexy, manly image. They were in their teens, Changmin the youngest was 16 and Jaejoong the oldest was 18.
2005-2007
They left for Japan in 2005 and debuted somewhere in April. Most notable song was probably Rising Sun. Dived into Asia market in 2006 with their first international, which is the "Rising Sun 1st Asia Tour". They won awards, amassed a huge fan base all over Asia; Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, China. Their image during this period have obviously matured compared to their debut "Hug" days. More boyish charms came out, but fans mostly still find them to be cute and often use the word "dorks" to describe them. Fans also said they exude charisma. So, overall, it still is not about being manly or sexy (even if there was sexy, it was not the main point and it was a fleeting moment, not part of their concept)
2008-2009
The main highlight here is Mirotic. Even the lyrics was supposedly considered to have too much sexual connotations, although I don't agree. I won't listen to the words "Under my skin" and decide I need to go sleep with the next male I see. Their image, is all about manliness, being sexy and having the girls all under their spell. And I believe Yunho & Jaejoong nailed it. Junsu, a little maybe, if I can get pass his Oyaji gags ^.^, Yoochun not really (but that's just my opinion), and Changmin, I have forever imagined him to be a younger brother, so its not possible to link him with the word sexy.

So, I still didn't get to my point yet. What if, the boys were made to entertain? I can imagine, they would have already be entertaining even before this. But decent entertainment, for example, having drinks with potential clients to negotiate product endorsement, CF deals etc. Those are acceptable business mingling and entertaining. But what if, with their new Mirotic image, some high power, filthy rich ajumma (or god forbid, ahjussi) is interested in the boys and she (or he T_T) can cut the "company" a deal they cannot refuse? I'll not write down what "interested in the boys" could mean, you can think it yourself, it can be very innocent or very indecent. But regardless of whether it is decent or not, it feels morally incorrect to me. So, what if the boys need to do some "toy boy" kind of entertaining? Honestly, I kept typing and stopping, because this is too disturbing. Again, don't ask me to prove it. I have no proof to show whether it happened, but neither does anyone have proof that it did not happen. And, I am not even keen on believing it happen, this is just a pure speculation. Could something like this be part of the "unfair treatment" that JaeChunSu speaks of? I can already imagine there would be people questioning, "hey, if it is, why is it not spelt out in the lawsuit?" Because if I am the boys and this really happened, I would not want the whole world to know, that I am not a singer, not an artiste, not a composer, not a lyricist, not a performer, not even an idol, I was a toy boy. These boys still have a long road ahead of them, they have friends and families they need to protect, they are humans like you and me. Get it? And besides, even if JaeChunSu is willing to bare it all, they would be dragging HoMin down with it. Could you do that to your best friends/ brothers?

I am going to stop here. The next time I write, it should be a new post. This was a very disturbing post for me to write. And a post that I believe will receive a lot of flack (if it is read by any JaeChunSu bias or HoMin bias). They would call me crazy for even imagining their oppas have to do these things. But like I say, I am not saying it is true. I am writing down a different perspective. And just as I do not have proof to show it is true, no one have proofs to refute it either. The world is really not just black & white. Especially the entertainment world...

Shady cosmetic business

Another topic of huge debate: Crebeau cosmetics
Gist of it: Shady cosmetic business, JYJ wanted in, HoMin didn't want it. SM ent is worried about Dong Bang Shin Ki's and SM ent's reputation to be associated with them.

To speak for HoMin:
So far, for all their endorsement, they have always done it as a group, all 5 of them. I cannot think of any reason why HoMin did not want to join the JaeChunSu for the Crebeau deal. Well, actually I can, and the reason is, there is something not right with Crebeau or to put it crudely, it was shady. I don't believe HoMin have any issue with doing endorsements, as they have done it before. I also don't believe HoMin have any issue with being associated with cosmetics. Everyone knows these boys put on makeup and they are all loved all the same, with or without makeup. And lastly, I don't think HoMin have anything against earning more money by involving with Crebeau if it was legit, healthy and all that. But well, maybe HoMin could also be thinking they do not want to do any side business, their only passion in life is their music. These 2 boys could also be thinking about their fans. Because you see, their fans love them so much, if they sell cosmetics, I am sure all the fangirls would spend all their money in those cosmetics, just to support their beloved Oppa. I remember watching in Mnet Making of Starwatch, Changmin was saying, he wished the fans would spare a thought for themselves and not be overly obssessed with DBSK, because "those noonas will eventually get married, have children and have their own live to lead". I may not have remembered word for word, but the gist of it is that. It showed to me, that Changmin, although the youngest, has really mature thinking, and really care for his fans. For those haters who want to say that all this are scripted, I rest my case. Because I can't prove to you that those are not scripted, I can't prove to you that those are Changmin's genuine words from the bottom of his heart. I just chose to believe there is good left in humanity.

To speak for SM ent:
Well, honestly I do not see why SM ent would want to stop the boys from investing. It is the boys' money. And if SM ent is really so evil, why not let JaeChunSu invest, burn their fingers, lose money and be forever enslaved to SM ent to earn back those money they lost with Crebeau? I know, I sound like an evil businessman, but its just a thought ok. And again. SM ent is a company, it needs to be responsible to a lot of people. If their reputation is affected, it would affect all their idols, not to mention everyone else on their payroll. These people all have families to take care of ok. Call me naive if you want. But, reputation is very important to a company.

To speak for JaeChunSu:
They have achieved so much in their life, do they want to risk it by investing in a "shady" cosmetic business?
There were antis who wrote that, because DBSK was so successful in 2008/2009, they could practically sell anything and strike it rich. Well, if that is the case, why didn't they sell something else. They could sell clothes, accessories, bags, pots and pans, stationery  and everything under they sky, why choose a "shady" cosmetic business and be so adamant about it to the point of suing SM ent?
Antis also said they wanted to use DBSK's name to promote the cosmetics and reap profits from it. But, did they print DBSK on the products? Or print their own pictures on the products? Perhaps print it on the paperbags? I don't remember seeing any of that. As for Jaejoong's Crebeau-Jeff, which many have claimed looked like a fan shrine rather than a cosmetic shop, I have to admit, yes it looks rather distasteful, despite me liking to look at Jaejoong. But think again, to decorate it to look like a fan shrine, anyone can do that. Heck, they 3 don't even need to own any shares or shops themself. They can get their family to do it. If I am not mistaken, Jaejoong's sister is the one manning Crebeau-Jeff. I mean, their family just need to spread the news, and fans will flock to the shop all the same. And seriously, if their intent is to use the DBSK (5 members) name, the moment they decide to leave and sue SM ent, they have thrown that option out. They could only use the JaeChunSu name.

To side track a little, people who do shady business and know that they are doing shady business, usually do not use their own name. Its a rumor that in Asia, money laundering is rampant and one common way is to get families to open up shops, boutiques usually. I don't really know how the whole process really works, but perhaps it has to do with manipulating the boutique's account, by making it look like it is earning a lot, and voila, dirty money is clean now!

I really do not have the energy to go study the Crebeau history or to dig up past article. Not because I am trying to deliberate close my eyes on certain things. But you have to understand, the Crebeau saga was way back in 2009. I promise if I have the time, I would do a proper research. But then again, I have clearly stated many times, my aim is not in proving what is wrong and what is right. I just want the blog to be an avenue to pen my thoughts. Or should I say, to "keyboard" my thoughts? Nah, pen it is! I don't want my life to have no romance ^.^

It was purely for the money...?

The most common reason JYJ antis give to explain the trio filling the lawsuit and leaving is that they are greedy and wanted more money.

To speak up for JaeChunSu:
If it was purely money, would JYJ really just get up and go. I didn't really know Dong Bang Shin Ki (동방신기) until 2011, but for fans who were with them throughout the years would know that Mirotic was their most successful album. They practically owned K-Pop in 2008 and that success leads on to 2009. Money should be rolling in. If SM ent have not break even before 2008, they should have with that Mirotic album and all the activities. All the more, money would be rolling in faster than they boys could blink. And I have read in pro HoMin sites that SM ent had worked out solo plans for each of the boys which they will be doing, in conjunction with their group activities. Hey, doesn't that sound like more income to anyone?

The part above looks at how there would be much money to be earned by staying with SM ent. So after looking at "staying", let's look at "leaving".

By leaving, I meant filling the lawsuit and giving up the Dong Bang Shin Ki fame. Lawsuit, no one likes to get into them. The 3 boys could either lose or win, which means it was a 50% chance. Not exactly a very high probability if you ask me. If they win, great, they are freed from the lawsuit, they get paid by SM for their work in 2009. That's about all. If they lose? They have to honor the contract, which means returning to the company that they sued. Can you imagine what their life & career would be like, if that happens? Or, if they don't want to return, they have to pay for the losses SM will incur with the trio violating the contract. How much would that cost? Remember, the contract is 13 years, their debut was in 2004, they left in 2009, there is a good 7 years left in the contract. And let's not forget, legal fees. I know there will be antis who will just say, yea, these 3 boys didn't think of this part, they are stupid. But that comment is not fair to them, who are we to judge them. Besides, they have been in the entertainment circle for 5 years, more if you count their trainee days, would they not know how hard the road ahead of them will be if they decide to go against the famous K-entertainment company, SM ent?

To speak up for HoMin:
If JYJ file the lawsuit and left for a better reason besides money, why didn't HoMin leave? If the income is really so bad working in SM ent, why did HoMin decide to stay. And I believe they signed for a further 3 years. These 2 boys are equally talented as the other 3 and equally loved by their fans, I do not believe they will think they deserve to be paid less. And if JYJ were really not paid what they deserved, wouldn't HoMin support them? Wouldn't the leader-shii, Yunho do something for his dongsaengs? (Although in this case, Jaejoong is not his dongsaeng since Jaejoong is actually the oldest)
Note: I think FTC made all entertainment companies shorten their contract to 7 years. So I believe HoMin's contract was also changed to 7 years. And they then signed for another 3 years with SM ent.
Updated 4-Dec-2011: I am not so sure about this Note I put above. Because I have read somewhere that says the above. I have also read somewhere that says their contract was not shortened to 7 years, but to 10 years, so up to now, the contract have not ended. And of course all are just speculations, because honestly, contract terms are not something you just announce to the whole world. Oh not to forget, another speculation is that, SM did not change the contract duration at all, so 13 years it is. I am so confused... o_O

To speak up for SM ent:
They spent a lot of good money to groom these 5 boys. Look at the music videos, photobooks and DVDs. I see Paris, Prague, Saipan, Bora Bora. I see aeroplanes and copters. In their house tour for AADBSK2, their apartment looks nice. They each have their own equipment for their work. I see lots of costumes, makeup, stylist, dancers, crews. All these cost money. Composers, lyricist, dance choreographer, manager, they don't work for charity. Album promotions and stage props aren't cheap. There were articles saying, the boys' cars were given to them as presents after awards, but still owned by SM. Now, I don't know how true that is, but even regardless of whether the cars are still legally owned by SM or not, they cost money. Those are all luxurious cars. So now that I have make my point on SM ent's investment, what I would like to say is, if you take a huge chunk of money to produce something and that something sells, wouldn't you want to ensure you can continue selling it and make money out of it. What I mean is, wouldn't SM try to keep all 5 boys happy, so that they can continue bringing in the money, since the boys have such a huge fanbase all over the world. To me, if I am someone who gets a say in SM ent, a shareholder or a member of the board of directors, my answer is, Yes, keep them happy and give them what they want. And I would continue saying that, unless, what they want is way beyond what I can give. Essentially, it means, if the request doesn't go overboard, I will gladly give them anything they ask for. But once it crosses the line, I will have to do something. And sometimes, the (right) choices the company needs to make, may not be the most popular choice. Besides, companies are set up to make money and it has responsibilities towards shareholders, board of directors and each and everyone of their staff.

End note:
I think I have wrote the most for JYJ, followed by for SM ent, and then HoMin.
Since the subject here is about JYJ being greedy, hence writing for their side would naturally be longer.
I really want to reiterate that I do not take sides. Because honestly SM ent is a company, I don't feel any attachment to them at all, yet I am writing down more words for them than for HoMin. Because, those are my honest opinions.
In future post, it would also be likely that the post for JYJ, HoMin & SM ent will not be the exact same length, because it really depends on the topic.

When I found out.....the lawsuit with SM

Before I start, I need to clarify a few things. I didn't start this blog to prove who is right, who is wrong or who is saint, who is devil. Because...just because

Another point is, I have mentioned my reasons behind starting this blog. Its purely personal and quite frankly, for my own sanity. You will understand if you read my earlier post. Hence, I will not be taking any sides, I will not be arguing like a lawyer, I will merely be expressing my opinions as flesh and blood; read: a human being. And may I add, a human being who have feelings. So, since I am not trying to win a case here, I may not be talking about every single detail, the things I mention may not be in chronological order and I probably would not be putting up transcripts or evidence in this blog. I say probably, because, I don't know, maybe one day, I will see the need to put up transcripts, evidences or the likes to better express my opinions.

Whew, that was long.

So, the lawsuit. It is such a mess that I don't know how to begin. Hmm, I think I will just write like telling a story, a story of my discovery.

As mentioned in previous post, their song Mirotic had me under their spell. It was catchy and nice, great singing; Yunho & Yoochun's rap, Changmin's scream, Junsu's vocal, Jaejoong's ad libs, and all their dancing. I actually think backup dancers are a waste of money in their case. Sorry dancer-san, but you may benefit other groups more than Dong Bang Shin Ki (동방신기).So naturally, I became interested in the group as well. And decided to Google, and in Wikipedia, I saw the lawsuit, but at that time I kind of ignored it, thinking  "ah, that was 2 years ago, it must have blow over and they are all together again". And I never really delve much into it. And then I watched more of their videos (concerts, variety shows, music videos, interviews etc) and in the comment section, I learned a lot. Though I would not say I believe every single comment I read, since everyone is free to express and stand up for what they want to stand up for. But soon, from actual videos, I started watching fan compiled clips, some of them are Yunjae and some are just happy moments of the 5 boys. And I realized I was tearing up. I was upset. I got so confused, the bond they had seem so precious, why, why did 3 leave without 2, why did 2 stay behind and not follow 3?

Thus I felt the need to learn more. I can't remember what keyword I used, probably "SM lawsuit"? But I think I ended up using "JYJ lawsuit" because I saw the words in those pages I ended up in. And somehow, majority of what I read was, "slave contract", improper treatment, not receiving payment and things along the line that totally sided with JYJ. There were of course also a few sites that sided with HoMin & yes, even SM ent. But I was bombarded with a plethora of JYJ biased sites and I have to admit, at that time, these were my thoughts:
* Poor DBSK was not treated humanly, they could have been abused
* They were not paid what they are supposed to get in regards to the amount of money they bring in for SM ent.
* The 13 years contract was a slave contract and just simply not right.
* JYJ left not for money, but for their own good and also not be artistically limited by SM ent who dictates how their music should be.
* HoMin did not leave, not because they didn't want to. They were forced to. There were many theories on this, some actually pitying HoMin while some bash them to no end.
I think, the above probably sum up my thoughts at that time.
And seriously, my life was miserable. Especially when I read articles in blogs about Jaejoong sending messages or calling Yunho and Yunho not replying or not picking up calls. Or when Jaejoong says he missed Yunho & Changmin. I hated SM ent at that time. I blamed SM ent for everything, for breaking up such a wonderful group of talented boys, for ruining their brotherhood, ruining the Dong Bang family, and for breaking the hearts of all their fans. But I supported both JYJ & HoMin all the time, despite the things I read were all JYJ biased.

However, 2 weeks ago, my heart softened towards SM ent. [Now, don't bash me yet]. Its more like I woke up and decided to use not just my heart, but also my head and to remember that, it takes 2 to tango.

But no, this realization did not help me with my misery. Because my left brain and my right brain and my heart would be arguing all at the same time!

I am going to end this here and in the next posts, I will show you what I mean by my left brain, right brain and heart argues at the same time.

The 5 that completes Dong Bang Shin Ki

Today's post is dedicated to the 5 members of Dong Bang Shin Ki (동방신기). I am going to focus on what I think of each of them and I may not put in known facts that are all over the internet like their age, height and so on. And really, these are my opinions of them, you don't have to agree.

Jung Yunho
Stage name: Uknow Yunho
Yunho, the leader-shii. I have mentioned this is previous post, but I really think he is very manly. His height probably have a lot to do with it. But it is definitely not the height alone, because we know Changmin is now 2cm taller than Yunho, but he doesn't possess the manly aura Yunho does. I am not sure if I am subconsciously influenced by the fact that he is the leader of the group, but he really does exude the air of a leader. He gives the feeling of someone who could make hard decisions for the group when they members themselves couldn't do it, someone who would really stand up and face the music alone if the group makes a mistake just because he is the leader, someone who would really shield the members and bear the hardships on his own as best as he could manage. Now, I admit, all this are base on "feeling", because, let's face it, I do not know him personally and neither do readers of this blog (haha, that is if anyone reads this). I have seen in interviews where the other members say that off-screen, Yunho is totally different from the cool leader he portrays. He acts all cute around them, "annoying" them with his cuteness.
If there are rap parts in a song, Yunho is usually the one taking care of them and I think he is pretty good. But I heard the Japanese & Chinese version of Mirotic, and he sounds really high pitched (like a girl) in the rapping. I am not criticizing him, just find it really cute & funny. His singing, he usually covers the lower notes and his voice can sometimes be neglected in songs because it tends to be a little softer. But since i listen with headphones, I can hear it clearly. And I have to say, although he is singing low notes, it sounds really soothing, gentle and kind.
His dancing is really good. Even the members think he is the best dancer among them. His moves are really clear and defined, lifting a finger, means lifting a finger, even if the dance is fast, you would clearly see it. Raising the hand means really raising it properly. In order words, you won't see any half-assed dancing from him. He puts 100% into every single move.
In some variety shows, I find Yunho sometimes tend to be a little less relaxed, it may be because he is the leader and feel he have a big responsibility to ensure everything goes well. He looks a little tense and nervous especially if the members are made to talk about each other, and it is his turn to be talked about. Perhaps, he have really high expectations of himself and hence worries how members look at him.
If he could be a part of my life, I would want him to be my:
1. Brother
2. Someone to fall in love with, date, get married and spend the rest of my life with.

Kim Jaejoong
Stage name: Youngwoong Jaejoong (Hero Jaejoong for international fans)
This is a complicated one. He is blessed with perfect skin and often people use the term pretty on him. Undeniably he does look pretty. But at the same time, he also looks undeniably manly. Of course, hair style, clothes and makeup will all play part in making him look more feminine or more masculine. Everyone says his eyes are really big. I don't know if I would say his eyes are big, but I would definitely say it is very attractive and arresting. I don't like breaking up people's facial features and analyzing them one by one, I prefer to look at the face as a whole, because I think that's what matters. I can't be staring at only your eyes/nose/lips/cheekbones/chin/eyebrows all the time right? So to sum it, Jaejoong have a very attractive face.
His voice, I like. And he seems to be able to pull of many different type of songs, ballads, R&B, rock, pop, soul; and his ad libs are good. He can hit both high and low notes and his voice can be soothing or husky which is really sexy. He did the rap in Wrong Number and I have to say its pretty good. I won't say its awesome and the best, but hey its really pretty good, bearing in mind that not everyone can rap.
His dancing, his moves seem to have this "lazy disease". I am not saying he is lazy, just that the way he dances, he looks he is just drifting/ floating around. I sincerely believe he also puts in a 100% to his dancing, but the "lazy" look is just him. Its like walking, some girls' walk is sexy, some feminine, some very boyish and totally not elegant; but I don't its done on purpose, its just how they naturally are. However, the more I watch Jaejoong's dancing, especially in Mirotic, I find it really sexy.
Watching him in live performances (during talks) and variety shows, I feel that he is really spontaneous and random, very funny too. Some people may not like people with this type of personality. I know that because I am like this too. And in crowds, there will be people who enjoys this, and there will also be people who dislike me thinking I am trying to attract attention and there will be some who totally do not get the joke or take the sarcasm to seriously. Sorry to digress and talk about myself instead, but I like his personality, at least the one I see onscreen, when he is funny, random, spontaneous and a little outrageous.
If he could be a part of my life, I would want him to be my:
1. Someone to fall in love with, date, get married, have beautiful children and spend the rest of my life with.
2. A really close friend, whom I could share everything with. Whom I could hold hands, hug and be close to just because we have a strong bond and not because we are romantically interested in each other.

Kim Junsu
Stage name: Xiah Junsu
Junsu oh Junsu. Although you aren't my favorite 2, I will readily admit, you have the most amazing singing ability. You see, he is so good that when I write about him, instead of begining with looks, I jumped straight to vocal. Now, don't get me wrong. Its not because Junsu is not good looking (he have a lot of fans too) and its also not because Yunho & Jaejoong's looks preceeds their talents. It just happened to be how I structure the writing when I start with Yunho and the pattern followed through in Jaejoong's part. And I didn't realize Junsu's was different until I scroll up. So yes, Junsu can hit really really high notes. From the Tone Test they did in one show, he won in a game among all the members for being able to hit the highest notes. The members even say that it is not even human anymore, dolphin Junsu.
Moving on to his looks, he is just somehow not my type, so I won't say I find him attractive as I am not attracted after all. But no, I don't think he is ugly. But he have a childlike innocence about him, the way he gets shy when members make fun of him, or embarrassed when he does his oyaji gags. Its really cute in a way, very childlike and endearing.
His dancing is really good too. When I watched Mirotic performances, I would say he is as good as Yunho. Just that Yunho have the advantage of height and makes it more enjoyable to watch. To give an analogy, its like watching TV, the bigger the screen, the better, since you could see clearer.
Variety shows appearances, well, his trademarks would be his Oyaji gags and also his eukyangkyang laugh. Oh, and his Oh My God Sun from Saipan Vacation. Makes me laugh thinking about his Oh My God Sun and all the Oyaji gags. But I have no idea who coined the eukyangkyang term. His laughing is definitely not "hahaha", but I don't get how it became eukyangkyang. But it is unique nonetheless. His embarrassed look when he gets made fun or bullied by his own members is really priceless, its like telling the audience, "yes people, I put up with these 4 guys everyday in my life". And oh, his Engrish moments, enough said. Haha.
If he could be a part of my life, I would want him to be my:
1. Brother
2. A colleague. Imagine the among of laughter I would have in my life. Eukyangkyang!!

Park Yoochun
Stage name: Micky Yoochun
His looks, to me, are probably a typical boy next door look. Someone whom your parents would approve of if you bring him home. I can imagine a lot of Mothers liking his type of look. Same with my views on Junsu, I don't find him particularly attractive. He does not have the childlike innocence Junsu have too. But he has something else. He have this look that tells me he would make a very good best friend, confidante, someone who can share your joy and sorrow with as a friend.
His vocal, to me, is somewhat, sorry to say, but nothing unique. He have a nice singing voice and is soothing to listen too. But that's it, nothing especially unique.
His dancing to me is also not bad. Its not as powerful as Yunho & Junsu, not as sexy as Jaejoong, but it is good enough. Yoochun's fan, don't bash me or hate me. Just stating my opinion here. But he plays the piano well, I remember seeing a performance of Begin (The Secret Code live at Tokyo Dome) where he was playing the piano. The whole performance, their singing and Yoochun's piano was beautiful.
If he could be a part of my life, I would want him to be my:
1. Best friend forever. Someone I could talk about boyfriend problems with, shop with, hangout with. Someone I would be really comfortable around.

Side track: The song Begin is one of my personal favorite too, I first heard it while watching their Bigeast Fanmeet video. They read their letters to the Bigeast fans, then they sang Begin and Bolero, and I cried listening to both songs, with Begin stirring more emotions. Perhaps just like how Love in the Ice makes me cry, its the same with Begin and Bolero, their voice were really full of emotion and sorrowful plus my little understanding of Japanese enable me to understand the meaning a little. To describe it in Japanese: ほんとに  うつくしい

Shim Changmin
Stage name: Choikang Changmin
Yea, the 막내 (youngest) of the group. He really have a cute look, just like a little brother. Especially when he smiles or laughs. Even during Mirotic days when everyone is supposed to be manly and sexy, he still have this childlike cuteness. In my books, he is in the adorable category. You can say he is good looking, but well, not my type. But I won't deny he does look good, height is of course a plus point, he is the tallest among the 5. Just look at his model like long legs. His adorableness is really when he smiles or laughs especially if he is embarrassed.
His singing, many have said he have a very wide vocal range. This I agree without a doubt. And his screamings are all epic. Granted at times, his screaming may be a little off, but hey most people would be totally off, most times or maybe all the time. It is not easy you know, don't forget they are all dancing as well while singing. Powerful dance steps I mean, not swaying around like dandelions in the wind. [Haha, I find this dandelion phrase that I came up with on they fly to be very funny. Please excuse me for this self praising]
For his dancing, I'd have to comment that it would be the same as Micky, as in, not as powerful as Yunho &  Junsu and not as sexy as Jaejoong.
But at this point, I need to admit, I may not have paid as much attention to Yoochun & Changmin, and hence when I write this, I can't describe their dancing as much. I could easily describe Yunho & Jaejoong since they were my faves and have my attention, and I enjoyed watching Yunho's powerful moves and Jaejoong's sexy moves. As for Junsu, his dancing really does make you look at him, hence I could describe his dancing pretty easily as well. So, very sorry Yoochun & Changmin. Maybe I will make it a point to notice your dancing more and come back to edit this post.
When I see Changmin in variety shows, the most I notice about him is how he cracks up at funny stuff, the way he laughs would start with his shaking, his shoulders, hahaha. I don't know how to describe it, if you watch him, you would know. And he sometimes comes up with the darn-est answers. In Happy Together, the host ask him, what's the difference of Japanese fans compared to Korean fans. With a straight face, Changmin answered, "they speak Japanese". Seriously, hahahaha and -_- at the same time. And also, his love for food, seems to surpass his love for anything else in this universe.
1. Younger brother. I would want to dote on him and buy him lots of yummy food. Though I wonder how long I can keep it up as I may go bankrupt really quick

Ah, that was nice, to be able to write down what I think of each of them, because as I mentioned, I don't have anyone to talk to about them. Not that I have no friends, just that if I talk to them about K-Pop group, they may seriously think I have gone mad and I don't think they will entertain me on this topic for long T_T

My favourite

To be honest, DBSK (동방신기) is the one and only boy band which I really ever liked. In the past I never really liked bands or singers, what I liked were songs. My attachment was only to the songs, either the melody or the lyrics, but never the performer. But DBSK (동방신기) totally had me.

And usually in a group, there will be members who are more talented or more popular. But this group, seem to be very balanced. All are equally talented and popular. Each have their own charm. Also, in such groups, the fans would usually like and support a particular member and put the other members aside, and in extreme cases, may even loath or hate the other members. For (동방신기), nah, never happens. Even myself, personally I really liked all five of them. This will be elaborated in another post.

I have mentioned in the Introduction post, that I first chanced upon them with the song どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう?2 or 3 years ago. And my favorite at that time were Yunho & Jaejoong. They were equal in terms of who I prefer more. Then as fate had it, I stumbled upon Mirotic. And again, I like Yunho & Jaejoong. I guess I am a very loyal & consistent person. However this round, I have to admit, I like Yunho more. Just that very very very tiny bit more. Yunho is truly a very good dancer. You don't see any laziness in him. His moves are all very clear and defined. Its like he puts in a 100% into every single dance step. Plus with his tall physique, he is a joy to watch when he dances. I watched a lot of different Mirotic performances. Yunho exudes a very manly aura and looks like someone who could protect you, someone whom in tough times will put his arms around you and say "I am here with you, I'll protect you" and you will feel safe. Yes, I want to feel protected.

I also mentioned that I discovered Yunjae while reading YouTube comments. So, I also ended up watching a lot of Yunjae clips. No complains though, since they are both my faves. But soon, my heart swayed towards Jaejoong. And then I re-watch those Mirotic performances, this time focusing on Jaejoong. His moves are clearly not as clear and defined as Yunho. Its almost as if he is lazy, haha. To compare, you could say Yunho's dancing is like a newscaster reading the news, perfect grammar, pronounciation and diction. And Jaejoong will be like someone whispering in your ear in a husky voice and you might miss a word here and there. However, I find that there is something very sexy about the way he dances. Sexy in a very manly way. Very seductive. This is one of the reason, why did I sway towards Jaejoong.

Of course I was also watching variety shows, reading old articles and such. And in the process, I somehow discovered similarity between Jaejoong and me, although he is a guy and I am a girl. Here goes:
* Everyone, even his own members say that he exudes a very cold and distant aura. But when you get to know him, he is actually a warm hearted person. I am also like that. Look very unapproachable and cold. However once they know me, its a different story altogether. People who are close to me knows this. For those who are not, they will never know, because in their eyes, I am forever cold and distant.
* Jaejoong likes to eat cereal with milk. So do I. I sometimes even eat it for dinner. Or randomly.
* When Jaejoong wears hoodie clothes, he almost always puts the hoodie over his head. So do I. Let me just say, being where I am from, this is not common at all.
* Jaejoong likes to cook and clean. So do I. But I suspect he is a better cook T_T than me.
* The way he laughs, his hahahaha. That's how I laugh too. And we do know laughter is quite unique. Of course it can't be so unique that everyone in the world laughs differently, but, well you get the drift. Junsu have his eukyangkyang and I believe Changmin really shakes when he laughs. Also, I think he laughs a lot, and really loudly. I do that too. I don't laugh in a girly girl kind of way although I am quite the girly girl.
* He likes elephant. My favorite stuffed toy, which I still remember to this day, was a blue elephant which I named Jumbo. I think Mummy threw it away as it was too tatty. I was really upset and I missed it till today.
* He keeps things to himself and always think a lot on his own. I do too, and probably that was why this SM lawsuit affected me so much. If you consider that I am not someone who followed them from 2004 till now, that I only really started knowing more about them and learning about the lawsuit in September this year, the effect it had on me is catastrophic.

I can't recall if there are more. But actually you really don't need another person to have a lot of similarities with you, to like them.

More reasons why I like Jaejoong, besides his sexy dance and our similarities. I like his voice. It sounds romantic & soothing in ballads, powerful in rock (heard him sang in their Premium Mini Live), seductive in certain part of certain songs, and his ad libs.

One more reason, from watching all their videos, I feel that he really cares deeply for all his members and takes it upon himself to take care of them. That, I find really attractive.

But seriously, Yunho is not that far away from Jaejoong. I still like Yunho alot. His manliness is still very attractive.

After writing so much about Jaejoong & Yunho, I feel guilty towards the other 3 members, because, I really like all 5 of them. Its just human to choose a favorite or two. Maybe I should write a post, to put down my thoughts on each of them.

But for now, I'll stop. Tomorrow is a working day for me and its a quarter to 1am now. Plus I had Love in the Ice on repeat last night and cried till I fell asleep and end up with a headache when I woke up. The headache is still there.

The Reason

Instead of trying to answer directly, why did I start this blog, I'd prefer to just write about what I had experienced in the past 1 to 2 months and hopefully, by the end of it, it would make sense and answer the question.

September 2011
At the end of Aug' I again heard a song a like while watching some blogger's video. She was showing her friend's and her clothes collection and had put a song as the background music. As usual, I liked the song, it was catchy and nice voices. So, look for credits. DBSK, Mirotic. Hmm, DBSK, where did I see that before? Never mind, go search for the full song anyway. Found the official MV. Saw their dancing, liked the song even more.
Note: At this point I was still blissfully unaware of any lawsuits or 2 and 3 and etc. I had Mirotic on repeat for days. Finally, one day, I decide to search DBSK online and landed on the TVXQ Wikipedia page. It was a very long entry and I don't think I read everything in detail. The word lawsuit caught my eye and I saw that it happened in 2009. At that exact point, I thought, well its 2011 now, perhaps its over and the 5 are together once more making good music. So I googled further using DBSK lawsuit. And that was when reality sink in. Lawsuit is still on. 5 boys are still separated. TVXQ came back as 2, the other 3 debuted as a trio called JYJ. At that point, I was upset, but not super upset yet. It was more of a "that's quite a pity" rather than "oh, what am I going to do now?"

But somehow, I don't know how, this group really had me. I was just drawn to them. Maybe its because I was listening to Mirotic too much? And end up being totally under their spell.

So begins my addiction to a page called YouTube. Music videos, concerts, fan meetings, variety shows, interviews and basically anything to related to DBSK (the 5 members DBSK) became part of my life. My songs playlist has only DBSK songs.
Note: I need to clarify that I was never like this in my entire life. I was never a fangirl. I never had a super strong preference to a particular band or singer. I listen to everything that I think is great, doesn't matter if it is Western or Eastern, group or solo, male or female. I was cool like that, my entire life. I surprised even myself with this liking to DBSK.

So with all this, I could of course identify who is who. Jung Yunho, Shim Changmin, Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun & Kim Junsu.

Then came the big problem, the more I watch clips of them, the more I got affected by the whole lawsuit fiasco. Affected by the fact that the 5 are no longer together, no longer keep in touch, no longer sing and dance together. Because, from watching all those, I find them to be 5 talented, hardworking, down to earth boys who are perfectly at ease with each other and love each other.
Also, while watching their clips, I also read those YouTube comments and hence was introduced to Yunjae. And so, I was also getting affected by the fact that there is no more Yunjae. That they can't be together. Yunjae will have separate post(s) since it is such a mystery.

With each passing day, I get more miserable. To describe it:
* I'll go to bed thinking about them. Mind you, when I say thinking about them, I really mean it. Its not like I fantasize being their girlfriend or anything. It is seriously thinking about when they can be together again, how the lawsuit is tearing them apart and about the good times when they are together as 5.
* When I wake up in the morning, they pop up into my mind.
* When I shower, my left and right brain will argue with each other, either about Yunjae, is it real? Or thinking why didn't all 5 leave or stay together in SM.
* I was frantically searching for videos of 5 of them in shows, concerts, interviews and whatever not and saving them. Even till today, I have not finish watching them. By right, I should have finished them since its already 1-2 months time. But there is a reason why. When I am really very upset, I'll just watch one of these clips, laugh at their funny & dorky moments and let myself think that they are in fact still 5 in a group. So there is a fear of running out of videos to watch if I go too fast. Of course, I can re-watch them and I definitely would not mind re-watching them, but I don't know, I just feel scared. Even with songs, its the same, I didn't go compile a list of all their songs and make sure I get it and listen to it. I am just discovering their songs slowly, maybe 1 new song in a few days?, a week?
Note: I had to d/l the videos first for fear it will be taken down. Songs will have lesser of such a problem.

Clarification:
I know with the lines I have written above, it will be hard for any sane person to NOT call me delusional. But I really am not. I can still work, have meals with people, carry out conversations with friends and colleagues. I still make jokes, I still laugh, still make people laugh. Its when the door of my room closes and I am alone, I allow the sadness to come out, allow the tears to flow.

There is one certain song of theirs that never fails to make me cry. It is the Japanese version of Love in the Ice. The one I listened to was a live performance from their Five in the Black tour in 2007. The first time I listened to it, I cried. Their voice was just so sorrowful. And I could understand a sprinkling of Japanese here and there. It was a beautiful and touching performance. From then on, every time I hear this song, tears will flow. I think that pretty much tells you why I chose to give my blog the name it has.
But 2 days ago, I cried while watching their live performance of the song The Way U Are. There is nothing sad about the melody, the lyrics or their voice. But I guess the "5 is no longer 5" is gripping me even harder now.

I needed some way to express myself. I couldn't talk to anyone about it. They will probably think I have gone mad or something. So, I decided to start this blog.

I apologize that my writing is all over the place.

Introduction

This is my first time writing a blog. I have never even kept a diary, though I have always wanted to. I have always think it would be great to be able to write down how I feel, special things that happened, things that put a smile of my face or faces of my loved ones, things that make me cry and many more. And to be able to read those entries again, days, weeks, months or years later and learn from it would make life much more meaningful. And would make one appreciate things & life more. But, after many years, I never did start writing, be it a diary or a blog...I am sorry...

So, what made me create this blog, out of the blue, on a normal evening?
Honestly, my thoughts are all over the place. So, although I clearly know the reason, it is so difficult to gather and sum up everything and put it to words. There can be a short and a long version to the answer, here goes:

Short answer: Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK), Tong Vfang Xien Qi (TVXQ), Tohoshinki

Long answer:
About 2 or 3 years ago, I can't remember clearly, whether it was 2008 or 2009, I heard a song while browsing or reading a blog, can't remember either. I heard a song, it was a Japanese song and liked it. Liked it enough to check the credits and found out the song was by a boy band named DBSK and the title is Why Did I Fall In Love With You.
Note: That is not the official title, but merely the translated meaning in English.
And so, that night, I went on to youtube and searched for DBSK and found the song. The official name of the song is どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう?[Romanization: Doushite Kimi Wo Suki Ni Natte Shimattan Darou?]

The clip I found happened to be a live performance and I have to say, it was beautiful. Their voices, each have its own unique characteristic but blended so beautifully together. I looked for the lyrics and tried to sing along and it was really difficult. The boys looked good too and at that point my favorite was Uknow & Hero. I really couldn't choose 1 between the 2 of them. So it had to be both!
I actually didn't know them and identified their name by looking at the lyrics because the person who uploaded the lyrics put the name of the singer beside it. I know if there are any DBSK fans reading this, they will probably want to stone me to death for not knowing who they are, but I will leave that to another entry.
So, very funnily, I was satisfied with just this one song. I did not search any further for more songs. Neither did I do anymore research on DBSK or Uknow or Hero. So, since it was a Japanese song and the member names were Uknow, Hero, Max, Xiah & Micky, I thought they are a Japanese boy band. Oh, also, I saw the word Avex on the stage. I am no huge Jpop fan but I do know Avex, hence at that point, I really did think they are a Japanese group.

Whew...That was long right, but I actually did not get to the point of starting this blog yet. To prevent my writing from becoming all over the place, I think I will explain in detail in the next entry.
