[Emotional] Keep Your Head Down Lyrics & Dance Controversy

Keep Your Head Down (KYHD) was the comeback album for HoMin. Many have speculated that the lyrics were directed at JaeChunSu. Some have even say that the Korean meaning of KYHD is extremely degrading. Also, some extremely "eagle eyed" fans claim that during the chorus part, where they sing "keep your head down" HoMin was pushing the dancers down with their hand, and they have 2 fingers up and 3 fingers down. So the 2 fingers up signify HoMin while the 3 fingers down signify JaeChunSu.

To be honest, I don't know Korean, so I had to google the lyrics' translation. I do admit some of the lyrics do look like it could sound like it is aimed at JaeChunSu. But hey, depending on situation and how you want to look at things, most songs can fit into a lot of situations. I remember I wrote a post on Tokiwo Tomete, saying how ironic it was. Because I felt the part that goes "To stop time and stay by your side forever" seems so apt for the 5 of them. So, there you go, anything is possible, depending on you want to look at it. Remember the infamous "do you see a young lady or a witch?" picture. Some people see both, some people can only see either one. This may not be a good example, but I think it serves to illustrate what I am trying to say: It all depends on how you choose to look at things.

It seems after the controversy it sparked, SM clarified that the lyrics are meant for a girl, from the perspective of the guy whom she broke up with/dumped. Yunho also said that. Of course Yunho would have to say the same thing as SM. But this time I chose to just believe SM and take it as it is, lyrics for an ex-lover. Makes everyone's life happier, why not?

So, even if the lyrics are really aimed at JaeChunSu, we need to remember, neither Yunho nor Changmin wrote them. All they did was perform it. SM do not let their artiste choose their material. This point have been said by JaeChunSu and have been proven by the contract clause which says the artiste need to abide by everything SM order them to do. Think about it, in this whole fiasco, what is SM's best weapon? Certainly not their accounting books, because I think as of Apr 2011, they still did not submit their DBSK related accounting books to the court. Unfortunately that was also the last of any update regarding the lawsuit. To me, their trump card is Yunho & Changmin. You see, they need to make everyone believe that there is nothing wrong with SM, nothing wrong with the contracts. How to do that? Well, HoMin are in the same group as JaeChunSu, and JaeChunSu says contract is not fair and they are not being treated fairly. And JaeChunSu have always said that this disagreement is between them and SM, never between the 5 members themselves. If SM could get Yunho & Changmin to go against JaeChunSu, more people may very likely start to believe that there really is nothing wrong with SM nor the contracts. Chances are, they probably would have asked Yunho & Changmin to spell it out explicitly, but they refused. So, how? Slip some suggestions into lyrics and dance, then just let fans do the speculations and start the rumors.

As for the dance part, the 2 fingers up and 3 fingers down. I actually purposely go re-watch the KYHD video again to confirm. Because honestly, I've watched KYHD quite a few times, but never notice the finger stuff. So, this time, I paid attention. I probably saw like once, at most twice, where it look as though the pinky and the thumb is parallel to ground, while the middle 3 fingers is pointing downwards. But it is really subtle, barely there. And for subsequent parts where they sing "keep your head down" and push the dancers down again, it just look like HoMin is spreading their palms, all 5 fingers are on the same level, which is parallel to ground and pushing the dancers down. To be honest, I conclude that there is nothing on 2 vs. 3 here. And by the way, dance moves can have subtle differences here and there without meaning anything. Go to youtube, search for Mirotic Dance version. The video is about 3m 28s long. At 1m 20s, pause it. Look at the 5 of them, supposed to be doing the same action: right hand beside shoulder with 1 finger pointing up and left hand stretch out. But they all look slightly different. To look at it with a bit of humor, let's focus on all their supposedly-out-stretched-left-hands:
- Jaejoong looked like he is trying to hit an incoming tennis ball with his left hand.
- Changmin looked like he is trying to cover his eyes from some blinding camera flash
- Yoochun looked like he wanted to dribble a basketball
- Junsu & Yunho both look like they are trying to stop and incoming car while letting little children cross the street.

To me, KYHD is a good song. Its a nice powerful dance song. But of course, nothing beats Mirotic for me, when it comes to their dance song. Mirotic is just spell binding. And of course, their Rising Sun dance is nothing short of epic. So, let's just enjoy KYHD, the song, their voices and dance and stop over-analyzing.

Oh wait, there is something I didn't like about KYHD. Their somewhat geometrical-print suit, somewhere in the middle of the video. Its just plain ugly. I know Yunho & Changmin are good looking and may be able to wears rags and make the rags look like designer label. But, some things really should never be worn. And those suits are one of them. Seriously I feel that some of SM's stylist really need.......to be shot. Just kidding, I don't kill and don't support violence. But seriously, some stylists needs to have some sense knocked into them.
